Vermont Mutual Completes Leadership Transition with Bridge and McDonnell

MONTPELIER, Vermont (July 1, 2015)—With the June 30th retirement of CEO William Catto, President Dan Bridge will take on the Chief Executive role. Current Senior Vice President Mark McDonnell will elevate to the number two position in the organization and partner with Bridge to lead the company.

"This completes a well-planned leadership transition that began several years ago", said Bridge. "Since joining the company in 2014, Mark has made significant contributions to our organization and I look forward to partnering with him as we move the company forward."

Bridge and McDonnell each have approximately 30 years of insurance industry experience and have held a variety of leadership positions at national and regional carriers before joining Vermont Mutual. Both are located in the company's Montpelier, Vermont Home Office.


Bridge Named President of Vermont Mutual Insurance Group

MONTPELIER, Vermont (April 15, 2015) — At the annual meeting held on April 15, 2015, the Board of Directors named Daniel C. Bridge President of Vermont Mutual Insurance Group. Bridge, the 17th president of the 187 year old group of companies, replaces former President and current Chief Executive Officer William A. Catto, who will retire on June 30, 2015. Bridge joined Vermont Mutual as a Resident Vice President in January 2009. Prior to joining Vermont Mutual, he held senior leadership positions at several regional and national insurance companies within New England.

"As Executive Vice President, Dan has played a lead role in guiding the strategic direction of our organization" said CEO, William A. Catto. "Dan's election to President is an important step in the leadership transition plan that began several years ago and I have every confidence in his ability to continue to advance our strategy, one that has consistently produced excellent operating results."

Terry Moore Joins Vermont Mutual as Vice President of Underwriting

MONTPELIER, Vermont (April 27, 2015)—Vermont Mutual Insurance Group has elected Terry Moore as Vice President of Underwriting. Mr. Moore comes to Vermont Mutual from Safeco Insurance, where he served as AVP and Regional Manager of Safeco’s New York and New Jersey region.

Mark McDonnell, Senior Vice President, stated “We’re very pleased to have Terry join the team at Vermont Mutual. His broad industry experience makes him a great addition to our organization.” McDonnell continued “beyond the technical expertise Terry possesses, his entire career has been spent partnering with agents in the Independent Agent channel, which is an added benefit to Vermont Mutual, since it is the only channel through which we proudly distribute our products.”

Prior to his time at Safeco, Moore was with OneBeacon as VP of Underwriting for their reciprocal companies, Adirondack Insurance and New Jersey Skylands. Starting as a Claims Examiner with Mutual Benefit Life, Moore’s experience brought him to Fireman’s Fund, where for nearly 20 years he held a variety of positions of increasing authority in Underwriting, Field Sales, Territorial Leadership, Finance and Administration, Pricing, Human Resources and Operations.

Mr. Moore will be based at the Group’s Montpelier headquarters.

Vermont Mutual Recognized as a Healthy Place to Work

Vermont Mutual Insurance Group® to be awarded the 2014 Governor's Excellence in Worksite Wellness Award by the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports.

MONTPELIER, Vermont (March 18, 2015) - Each year the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports awards Vermont employers who promote a work environment that encourages and enables employees to improve their overall health. This is the eighth year Vermont Mutual has been recognized by the state for its efforts in worksite wellness. The govenor's council also recognized several outstanding Vermont Mutual employees who helped design the initiatives: Sue Chicoine (Vice President of Human Resources), Heather Schmidt (Sr. Human Resources Generalist), Pat Murray (Training Coordinator) and Holly Poulin (HR Coordinator).

Focus on workplace wellness has received considerable attention in recent years, especially as it benefits both the individual and the company. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) cites* some of the many benefits of a healthy workplace to help combat the prevalence of chronic disease as it relates to business:

  • Improved employee health and well-being.
  • Reduction in absenteeism and presenteeism and increased productivity.
  • Lower healthcare cost increases associated with lower employee health risks and improved health status.
  • Ability to affect workers' compensation related expenses through integration of safety and health promotion.
  • Improved employee job satisfaction and retention.

Vice President of Human Resources, Sue Chicoine, explains: "the Vermont Mutual vision of wellness embraces the physical wellbeing of our employees, but also includes other areas of wellness, including: career wellbeing, social wellbeing, financial wellbeing and community wellbeing." Wellness tools such as free health screenings, employee flu shots and educational seminars are offered each year at Vermont Mutual. Additionally, Vermont Mutual supports and receives significant employee participation in community and charitable events that encourage active lifestyles, including the American Cancer Society's Breast Cancer Walk, Vermont Corporate Cup Challenge and Freezing Fun for Families.

The recipients of this year's Worksite Wellness award will be recognized at the 2015 Annual Worksite Wellness Conference, March 25, 2015, at the Sheraton Hotel & Conference Center in Burlington, Vermont.
